KOMP Phenotyping Conference 2009 Bethesda
A conference to discuss a potential NIH-funded effort to phenotype the KOMP resource was held last week in Bethesda. About 25 scientists were invited to hear about KOMP, the IKMC and IMPC, and effors to phenotype other mouse mutagenesis resoures worldwide. The invited participants provided advice and recommendations for how a phenotyping effort should best proceed. Everyone was very enthusiastic and supportive of the prospect for a KOMP phenotyping effort, and were looking forward to using the data and information that would be generated to inform and facilitate their research.

Outreach video: Animal Biotechnology
Animal Biotechnology is an educational video, for outreach purposes, prepared by Alison L Van Eenennaam and colleagues of the Department of Animal Science, University of California, Davis, California, USA.

"Animal biotechnology encompasses a broad range of techniques for the genetic improvement of domesticated animal species including selective breeding, artificial insemination, cloning, and genetic engineering. Learn about both biomedical and agricultural applications of animal biotechnology and some of the science-based and ethical concerns that are engendered by certain applications."

The KOMP Repository Offers Advanced Search Functions
Dear KOMP Customers,

We recently added a number of innovative search functions to our website. Your comments on these functions are welcome. At the KOMP Repository, we aim to make KOMP products easy to find and order. Our standard search page is accessible from all pages of our website and offers specific searches by mouse gene symbols and current and obsolete gene names and their human homologs and MGI, NCBI, Vega, Ensembl, and CCDS IDs. The Advanced Search options feature Gene Ontology, Online Mendelian Inheritance, Microarray, and Literature Reference searches.

For example, if you are working on a category of genes, the easiest way to check whether we have products available for your favorite genes is using the Reference Search page and searching for your name. The same search function can also be used for searching for your favorite PubMed keywords. If you just completed a gene expression study and want to submit a list of available KO products into a grant application that would validate your gene expression results, just paste your probeset IDs into our Microarray Search page to find out which of these genes are available as KOMP products. If a product is not yet available at this time, you can still add it to your list of My Favorites and we will email you when these genes will become available. Please let us know how we can better serve your needs.

Sincerely,

Kevin Dawson

Director of Informatics, KOMP Repository

Sharing mutant mice... A question to readers.
What are the obstacles or hurdles to depositing genetically-altered mouse lines you have made into public repositories, like the KOMP repository, or the MMRRC?
